All the soil is removed and the roots wrapped in a wet paper towel. Then it's put into a plastic bag (not a Ziploc -- far too expensive) and sealed. No disturbance at all in shipping, which was priority mail. My mail carrier knocked on my door when it was delivered and I was able to plant it right away. It's larger than the same hosta I lost to drought a few years ago. I was pointed to Hallson's by somebody on the Hostas forum, so it was a reliable reference. You can't be too careful these days with HVX popping up at big box stores and mail order nurseries alike. If you want perfect hostas, buy from Hallson's. Oh, and they sent me a beautiful lily bulb as a bonus. A little late to plant, since my all-container garden is full, but I appreciate very much their thoughtful gesture. After having the ship date come and go (mid March), I sent them an e-mail as to the status and within 15 minutes got a return phone call. Seems Mother Nature decided to drop a late season foot of snow! Chris offered to split the order into two shipments based off what they had in the coolers and what had to be dug later. Got the USPS tracking e-mail 2 days later (next day was Sunday) and had the bulbs in hand 4 days later. Bulbs came very well packed, in individual bags and with garden tags for each variety. They even threw in a couple of "bonus" bulbs of a variety I didn't order...nice touch. Wish I could post pictures here since these are some of the biggest bulbs with plenty of roots that I have seen in quite a while. All in all from finding Hallson Gardens on the DG Top 30, to the order and the product arriving everything couldn't have gone better. Hopefully the product will grow as promised and if not, I have confidence they would make it right. I would definitely recommend them to friends! The post office did deliver the package a couple of hours after we called (chg'ing the pkg status to "Delivered"), I was out of town for 2 days commuting between work and my father's, and by the time I opened the package I found a few items fine (mostly sedums), and a few items (lungwort and huechera) flagging a bit. Chris replaced those items that were distressed. Chris made what could have been a frustrating experience (due to no fault of his own) a pleasurable one. I am both impressed and grateful. I can not recommend Hallson enough. After his death the house and garden just went into such disrepair by renting thier house. But since I have grown up, moved home, bought thier home and starting to fix his legacy to this yard. Hallson made such an impression on me that for a moment there was a glimmer of hope of seeing this echanted garden that I grew up playing in a reality just with a small box of plants.
