I knew when and what was happening as far as shipping. The plants arrived today-very fast shipping, very well packaged-they are nice big root balls with a decent top of green. I am thrilled! They look healthy as can be. I even got a nice little extra too, will look great in the flower bed. I will for sure order from this company again. | | Positive | cinti5291 (2 reviews) | On July 3, 2008, cinti5291 Cincinnati, OH wrote: I ordered 5 Bertram Anderson sedum. They were sent bare-root (as made clear in their on-line info); they arrived quickly and well packaged. They've been planted and are doing well. I was truly surprised at the generous size of each plant. There was another sedum included in the order as a bonus. I will do more business with these folks. | | Positive | JeannieB (2 reviews) | On June 28, 2008, JeannieB Clarksville, VA (Zone 7b) wrote:This was my first purchase from Hallson and I am already planning my next. I placed two orders this year; one in January and one just last week. It arrived today and I couldn't be happier. I actually received orders from two hosta nurseries today and the plants from the other place, which are nice, can't even compare to the ones from Hallson Gardens. Hallson's are double the size with double the leaves.
I have always received healthy plants and never worry about HVX when I order from Hallson's.
I would recommend Hallson Gardens to anyone looking for a single plant or a garden's worth. I only wish they were closer to me. I would love to visit the nursery and really do some shopping. | | Positive | patnjbob (22 reviews) | On June 24, 2008, patnjbob Blossom, TX wrote: I did some research on Hallson's before I contacted them. I looked on this site and decided to go ahead and order. Let me say, this is an absolutely wonderful source for hostas. I received beautiful healthy plants and a bonus also. I would highly recommend talking with Chris first, then order away. He's honest with what sizes will be sent and when they ship, they take extreme care in making sure your plants will arrive fresh and looking like they were just dug 10 minutes before you got them. I'm highly pleased with this company and highly recommend them. | | Positive | joy2u (1 review) | On June 20, 2008, joy2u Flushing, NY wrote: If you can only order from one nursery this season... Every plant I've received (including their thoughtfully chosen bonus plants) is a winner! I only wish I had a bigger garden. | | Positive | KLK7 (2 reviews) | On June 16, 2008, KLK7 Montgomery, IL wrote: I ordered for the first time from Hallson's. I was very impressed with the size and quality of their plants. The fact that their hostas are field grown is the primary reason I purchased from them vs. a competitor.
I had a small mistake with my order. Chris remedied the problem quickly and politely. Good customer service is key with me and hard to find these days. I definately will be back. | | Positive | rosethyme (9 reviews) | On June 16, 2008, rosethyme Denton, TX (Zone 7b) wrote:WOW! I was amazed at the size of these hostas and so healthy and well packaged. I can hardly wait to order more from them. Hallsons is definitely the the ultimate hosta source. And the bonus plant is just as awesome...it is Holy Mole(was on my wish list). Love the Kiwi Gold Rush I picked out....get this one. It is a big, really bright one and will stand out in the garden.
The lilies are great also and am wanting to order some of their other perennials.
They're having a great sale right now so check it out. Any questions about their plants, just email Chris....he is very friendly and helpful.

Just got my second order of hostas today from Hallsons and am just as happy with this order as the first. BIG plants and packaged so well. Also received another bonus hosta which I\'m really pleased with...Nightlife. Thanks, Chris!
HALLSONS IS THE #1 SOURCE FOR HOSTAS.
Karen | | Positive | revclaus (24 reviews) | On June 1, 2008, revclaus Denver, CO (Zone 5b) wrote:This is the first hosta I've ordered from Hallson's and I'm SO impressed! It was much bigger than I have received from other mail order sources. The way they package it is ingenious and virtually assures success when planting. All the soil is removed and the roots wrapped in a wet paper towel. Then it's put into a plastic bag (not a Ziploc -- far too expensive) and sealed. No disturbance at all in shipping, which was priority mail. My mail carrier knocked on my door when it was delivered and I was able to plant it right away. It's larger than the same hosta I lost to drought a few years ago. I was pointed to Hallson's by somebody on the Hostas forum, so it was a reliable reference. You can't be too careful these days with HVX popping up at big box stores and mail order nurseries alike.
If you want perfect hostas, buy from Hallson's. Oh, and they sent me a beautiful lily bulb as a bonus. A little late to plant, since my all-container garden is full, but I appreciate very much their thoughtful gesture. | | Positive | jj7749 (2 reviews) | On May 24, 2008, jj7749 Reno, NV wrote: Hallson offers the most gorgeous plants. My hibiscus plants were so huge it was unreal. So healthy with new shoots popping out everywhere. The bare root ostrich ferns I ordered are already a foot tall in less than 3 weeks. I was so impressed that I placed a second order and got that shipment in 2 days. The complimentary plants that Chris tucks in are so great. I have ordered off of Dave's other Top 20 but Hallson is by far the best. My hosta, ferns, hibiscus, and perennials are THRIVING. Exceptional customer service. Highly recommended. | | Positive | bordersandjacks (4 reviews) | On May 20, 2008, bordersandjacks Seabrook, SC (Zone 8b) wrote:I ordered several hosta that were very nice in size, great root system, and received a bonus hosta, Dark Star! Unfortunately, for another company, their order arrived on the same day. The comparison was unbelievable. Hallson beat the other company hands down in packing, instructions, and oh, the plants.
My hostas from Hallson were up to 8 inches tall, with almost that much in root, too. Their plants were exceptional.
The other company had sent one that was not even up 2 inches and had little roots, and their prices were higher!
I plan on doing all of my Hosta business at Hallson. And will definitely check their other selections. | | Positive | Cheryl8 (4 reviews) | On May 7, 2008, Cheryl8 Jamesburg, NJ (Zone 6b) wrote:Just received my first order of two hostas from Hallson. Thanks Chris! | | Positive | Tstorm1 (1 review) | On March 31, 2008, Tstorm1 Lexington, SC (Zone 7b) wrote:Ordered from Hallson Gardens on Jan 21, 2008 for an order in zone 7a. Knew I was ordering late, but had trouble with another company (wish I had found DG long ago). Was surprised to find they still had enough stock to completely fill my order (about 45 lillies). Order was placed and within 30 minutes I received my e-mail receipt, confirmation and expected ship date. After having the ship date come and go (mid March), I sent them an e-mail as to the status and within 15 minutes got a return phone call. Seems Mother Nature decided to drop a late season foot of snow! Chris offered to split the order into two shipments based off what they had in the coolers and what had to be dug later. Got the USPS tracking e-mail 2 days later (next day was Sunday) and had the bulbs in hand 4 days later. Bulbs came very well packed, in individual bags and with garden tags for each variety. They even threw in a couple of "bonus" bulbs of a variety I didn't order...nice touch. Wish I could post pictures here since these are some of the biggest bulbs with plenty of roots that I have seen in quite a while. All in all from finding Hallson Gardens on the DG Top 30, to the order and the product arriving everything couldn't have gone better. Hopefully the product will grow as promised and if not, I have confidence they would make it right. I would definitely recommend them to friends! | | Positive | 2862scooter (5 reviews) | On October 22, 2007, 2862scooter East Greenwich, RI wrote: I just received my second order from Hallson. The plants in both orders are/were high quality / and very large for the price. The customer service is excellent! My experience with this last order illustrates the quality of the customer service under trying circumstances... I noticed my order had not arrived when I expected. I checked the email with delivery info, clicked the link and found the package had "arrived at location" 4 days prior. I asked Chris for some assistance tracking the package (I had a very busy day planned at work and with some care I needed to provide for my father) Chris contacted my post office immediately. The post office informed Chris the package had been delivered. Still, I was sure I had not recieved my plants. I called the post office myself and got the same answer -the package had been delivered.
Long Story short after telling Chris regardless of what the post office said I had not received the Hallson pkg and providing what email evidence I could to support this (I supplied this evidence on my own not at Chris' request) Chris offered to replace the delivery with no questions... The post office did deliver the package a couple of hours after we called (chg'ing the pkg status to "Delivered"), I was out of town for 2 days commuting between work and my father's, and by the time I opened the package I found a few items fine (mostly sedums), and a few items (lungwort and huechera) flagging a bit. Chris replaced those items that were distressed.
Chris made what could have been a frustrating experience (due to no fault of his own) a pleasurable one. I am both impressed and grateful. I can not recommend Hallson enough. | | Positive | wlmueller (1 review) | On August 26, 2007, wlmueller Columbus, WI wrote: This was my first time ordering plants by mail, and was very pleased with the results from Hallsons Gardens. Purchased only hostas. They were extremely healthy with very large root systems. Chris is very helpful with advice and great customer service. Hallson's is also very proactive in the effort to control the HVX virus being spread throughout hostas, and I feel very confident of the plants I purchase there. The plants are beautiful, most are much larger than expected. Information sheets on planting each different kind of plant as well as a "bonus" plant were unexpected and very nice extras. It was great to be able to refer to the included instructions as I was planting instead of running into the house to consult a book or the internet. I, too, was nervous about ordering bare-root plants. But these were very large, in great condition, and better than any comparible potted ones I've gotten recently.
On top of everything, the prices for plants and shipping are really reasonable. And they threw in a bonus plant as well. When my plants arrived yesterday I carefully inspected my plants being suspicious of bare root from nurseries due to bad experiences elsewhere and was suprised to find these are some of the healthyest plants I have ever recieved from mail order. The lillies still had roots and each one had a beautifull healthy nose already growing up out of the bulb, get that from another mail order company!
All of the plants are good sized and obviously healthy, and shipped at perfect planting time for my area. Also the plants are still mostly dormant, which again is perfect for this time of year.
These guys obviously know their plants and strive for customer satisfaction, I'm ordering more and feel confident recomending them to others! | | Positive | nanny_56 (10 reviews) | On April 19, 2007, nanny_56 Putnam County, IN (Zone 5b) wrote:I ordered daylilies, lilium bulbs & hosta from Hallson Gardens. I placed my original order in Jan. for spring delivery and over the course of the last couple of months decided to add to it. All it took was an email to Chris and he emailed me an updated list each time. I received it yesterday. Fantastic packaging. They are more than happy to answer any questions.
Excellent prices, comparable to some others, but what you receive from Hallson Gardens is exceptional.
Chris & Brian set the standard that all mail order nurseries should try to achieve!! On May 17th, 2007, nanny_56 added the following:
Just to update, All plants are thriving. Hostas are leafed out and gorgeous, Echinacea is growing, it was sent bare root and has almost caught up up with other from somwhere else that had leaves already! Daylilies are growing by leaps and bounds.
If they have what I want this is where I am going to buy it from now on. I have learned it doesn't hurt to inquire about something if it is not on their list. On May 22nd, 2007, nanny_56 added the following:

Overall, a very good experience with this company. On May 20th, 2007, RIPlanter added the following:
Ordered a second time from this company, since the first batch was so great. The second group of plants was just as good as the first. The company also has great customer service. I was worried because three of the hosta had not yet poked through the ground. The owner advised me that those three typically appear later than others, and assured me that if for any reason they did not grow, they would be replaced without charge. Sure enough, the three grew as promised later in the spring. The fact that the company stood behind its product so well speaks volumes to the integrity of this outfit. | | Positive | mollyjenning (12 reviews) | On April 10, 2007, mollyjenning Cos Cob, CT wrote: You just can't go wrong when you order from this company.
The perrenials that arrived in an order last week had large, fat, healthy roots. I potted them up in gallon containers, but some of the roots were so large they really could have been put in slightly larger containers.
By using this company, you can acquire a large number of perrenials at a very reasonable price.
I will definitely order from them again. | | Positive | bagel_k (11 reviews) | On January 17, 2007, bagel_k Central, NJ (Zone 6b) wrote:Very good quality healthy and large plants at very reasonable prices. Plus fast shipping (within a week), friendly service and generous bonus plants. Probably the best deal around in terms of quality/price. I've ordered daylilies and hosta in summer 2006, and was extremely pleased with plants, big and healthy. Got a bonus daylily, HUGE. They all bloomed first year planted late July! I've ordered more plants in fall, including astilbes, lilies and some others. Also got perfect plants plus extra astilbe and bonus lily bulbs. Lily bulbs were larger than I bought from big bulb company and cost only about 1/3-1/2 price (and they had live roots still attached). They have good selection of lilies, daylilies and shade perennials, and LOTS of hostas. I only wish I had a bigger yard. Thank you!

I am restoring my grandfather's garden which used to be legendary here in asheville NC. He used to be a grower for the biltmore estate so nnedless to say his garden was beautiful. After his death the house and garden just went into such disrepair by renting thier house. But since I have grown up, moved home, bought thier home and starting to fix his legacy to this yard. Hallson made such an impression on me that for a moment there was a glimmer of hope of seeing this echanted garden that I grew up playing in a reality just with a small box of plants.
