I KNOW....it is a beautiful white pumpkin but Charley Brown and I prefer orange. Appreciate that white too. It takes just as long and as much work to grow that nice white as it take me to grow a giant 1000 pounder which I never quite did grow anyway. It's not a plant racial issue. I just prefer orange and big even if I have to hire a front end loader to set it on my trailer.

Oh yes, those Zogola tomatoes are neat looking.

I was confused at first whether it was a white pumpkin or a white squash since they are coming up with new varieties of everything. I`m thinking after reading everything that it is indeed a white pumpkin? I like it.

...

Posted by Lilypon (from Moose Jaw, SK) on August 26, 2008 at 9:55 PM:

Karen it's a pumpkin (but they are all considered squash....so you are right either way). :)

It's Cucurbita pepo 'Baby Boo' [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]

I'd love to grow something at my garden that would make the news (but then again it's at a community patch so probably the less news the better). Last year I grew 13 birdhouse gourds to maturity here and this year I have 2 cannonball gourds growing (and are at mature size now).......that is newsworthy here but I'm glad they weren't put in the paper.

Posted by CMoxon (from Urbandale, IA) on August 23, 2008 at 1:59 PM:

It's from the Great White North! What other color would you expect?! If it was orange, it would stand out against the snow and all the critters would come and eat it. So it uses the famous Canadian Camouflage trick to disguise itself! And the tomato leaves really confuse the squash bugs.

(I am actually Canadian, so I'm allowed to make jokes about the great white north...wouldn't want any of my fellow Canadians thinking that I'm one of those people who thinks we all live in igloos year round and have fur coats on in July)

Lilypon; You will have to let us know how those white punkins taste.
I was tempted to plant some but I plum run out of space. I have several kinds of squash then some melons on the other side of the garden. Abunch of sweet potatoes inbetween, then all my tomatoes. All taking up a lot of space. Not to mention the sweet corn, 9 rows of that. Think I will have enough to feed us through the winter. Though I am glad I planted extra as it hasn't been that great of year for the tomatoes here.
But I will still have enough to give some to some of our older folks.

Nice looking pumkin

...

Posted by Lilypon (from Moose Jaw, SK) on August 23, 2008 at 12:52 PM:

Thanks Rand :)

Your garden sounds a lot like mine (but we don't have quite that much corn growing).

3 rows 30 feet long (with some of my other pumpkins) : [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]

Here's some other pics of what we've got growing this year: [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]
I'll have to get busy and photograph some more of my peppers (we've got about 10 varieties growing).

We were lucky enough to get 20 x 180 feet (when all was said and done) this year.....a bit too much work but it's been a lot of fun too.

re your tomatoes........Are you getting lots of rain there?

...

Posted by Moofiepoo (from Orlando, FL) on August 23, 2008 at 2:00 PM:

I think it looks like a Mator Punk. Good looking punkin.

I am getting ready for my fall garden. Our summer was so bad that the summer garden was a huge flop. Between the crazy weather and now Tropical Storm Fay, I got some burgundy beans and that is about it. The one lonely little tomato I got...was stolen..not sure if 4 footed or 2 footed theif.

To have a garden that big would be a dream for me. I pack alot into the area I use. But really wish I had more area I could use. I try to feed my family and the elderly neighbors too.

...

Posted by Lilypon (from Moose Jaw, SK) on August 23, 2008 at 2:35 PM:

Hi. Moofie :)
Normally we'd only get 2o by 9o but this year they added on a new gardening area and not all were taken so rather than grow weeds they handed extras out. I wish you could get a larger plot too...with your normal growing conditions in Florida I'm sure you could grow an enormous amount of food. Here some veggies do very well but others, like peppers, aren't as productive given our shorter growing season (so I grow more plants to make up for it).

Btw do you look at the tomato forum? There are 2 fellows there (Tplant and Aries?) That. grow in zone 1O in earthboxes and get amazing crops from them.

...

Posted by randbponder (from Hornick, IA) on August 23, 2008 at 2:59 PM:

Moofie; I would tease my neighbor that I would sneak in and swipe that first tomato. Only joking of course. One year I went to the trouble of going to town and buying some tomatoes, and used paper clips and hung a couple tomatoes from a couple vines, waited till one of them came out to the garden. Pretended to gripe about their use of a potent fertilizer or something. Their eyes nearly popped out when they saw those tomatoes. It was good for a great laugh.

Lilypon; We got most of our rain early on when it was cold. I am having to water now.
Our corn is all put up now. Us guys got together and made a day of it.
I picked it in the morning then took it down to our locak coffee shop. and about that time the Lutheran minister showed up, I inlisted him. So three of us were shucking it outside in the shade. Then Gary using his big pot Blanched it, then I and another friend were cutting it off the cob an the minister was bagging it. We all had corn for our freezers. I took the husks home to my compost pile. We also had a good time just visiting.
