The only thing that needs to be scared are your plants. This is a 'white grub,' a larva of a beetle in the family Scarabaeidae - see [HYPERLINK@ohioline.osu.edu] These larvae feed primarily on roots of plants, such as grasses, and some can be very serious turf pests. The adult beetles mainly are leaf feeders.

Numbers count here. If there are only a few don't worry. It's when there are a lot that you will see the resulting damage. Then you might want to take some action to destroy the adult beetles - to keep them from mating and laying their eggs in the ground - to become grubs. I find these in the soft soil of my gardens, but never enough to be of any concern. When I find them I give them to the birds to eat.

wow. i believe the chicken loves to eat them too. i am keeping the grub in a plastic container now and providing food and water for it. it never wants to eat the stick. i just wanna see how is the adult look like and to confirm the species.

What are you feeding it? They are used to eating whatever they were eating in the ground.

As large as it is, it is probably ready to pupate. If you found it in the ground, that is where it would pupate. So, I would get a deep container, put soil in it, dampen it just a bit, put the grub on it, and let it dig to the depth where it will pupate. Put the container in a covered area that has the same temperatures as outdoors, and be prepared to wait. It may be next year before you see the adult beetle emerge.

so i just put in the soil and a bit of water for the grub and leave it as undisturbed till next year? i love to do so. it is so cruel to feed the chicken or bird for me. i love to know what is the adult would be.

The grub doesn't drink water. Moisten the soil a little bit so that it is not completely dry, but not soggy either. You can just use some soil from your garden that the grub would have been in. Place the grub in with the soil, put a lid on top with some holes, and then wait. It will dig down into the soil to pupate.

SOS!! I guess i have put too much water into the soil. The grub i am rearing seems like not moving at all and like drown in the wet soil. Do i need to feed them something else? such as root of plants?

I don't want it to die...

Maybe a long wait...

White grubs are the immature stage of scarab beetles. They live in the soil for up to 3 years before maturing into the adult beetle.
Symptoms. White grubs eat Fraser fir roots, leaving few feeder roots and stripping the bark off of main roots. Occasionally, feeding marks can be found on larger roots. The loss of root causes aboveground symptoms of tree yellowing, wilting, and dying.

oh..yes.sure..please help me to find more info as now i keeping it as my "darling" in office. and i do not know how to really take care of it besides waiting for it to pupate. And add more water will make it drown? or will it be infested by fungus and die eventually just like how termites die??

I wouldnt keep the soil wet no. I find the most grubs in my gardens under plant roots with nice loamy soil. If i squeeze the soil together it stays in a ball but water doesn't come out.
Maybe try getting a grow light and put the grub in an aquarium with soil and plant some various grasses in it? Water when the grass seems to need it as im pretty sure the grub gets water from the roots. :-)
